High-frequency rail announced for Quebec City-Toronto corridor

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced Monday there will be a high-frequency passenger rail service between Quebec City, Ottawa and Toronto.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced Monday the federal government is moving ahead with procurement for a high-frequency passenger rail service between Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

The minister made the announcement on board a VIA Rail train bound for Montreal. He said the project will allow for dedicated tracks to be built between the cities, and that will allow more train departures each day, as well as maximum speeds of 200 kilometres per hour. Currently, frequency and speeds on VIA Rail trains are limited because the service must share tracks with freight trains.
