Reject unsolicited transport projects, says Grattan Institute

Governments can slash the cost of big road and rail projects by refusing to stump up cash to fix problems after contracts have been signed and rejecting unsolicited proposals, the Grattan Institute has found.

Melbourne’s $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel is an example of a transport project that has ended up with problems that were not foreseen when contracts were signed but “perhaps could have been with more work”, said Marion Terrill, Grattan’s transport and cities director.
