CityLab Daily: Philadelphia Is Finally Getting a New Transit Map

September 17, 2021 (US)

Philadelphia’s rail system, SEPTA, hopes to shed its enduring moniker “Inepta” with a $40 million wayfinding improvement campaign. The sixth-largest U.S. transit system by ridership has navigational challenges that stem from the fact that it is an amalgam of technologies and vehicle types, including underground trains and remnants of the city’s legacy streetcar, writes Laura Bliss.

The proposed masterplan includes a new map and better signage, redesigned based on international best practices, as well as a rebranding of SEPTA’s various offerings. And it comes as Philadelphia looks to lure riders back from a system that’s losing about $1 million in daily revenue.
