Still no arrival time for €1 billion-plus rail project

An opening date has still not been set for the government’s flagship rail project.

The multibillion-euro MetroLink connecting Swords with Dublin Airport and the city centre was due to be completed by 2027, but Eamon Ryan, the transport minister, said last week that it could be delayed by up to 2034.

In the government’s revised National Development Plan (NDP), launched yesterday, the Dublin metro project is listed in the €1 billion-plus price band but has no cost estimate or completion date.

The blueprint sets out a record €165 billion in capital spending over the next ten years including €35 billion on transport projects, with the government allocating a 2:1 spending ratio in favour of sustainable transport over new roads.
