200 years of train travel will be celebrated with every ounce of energy

There will be celebrations throughout 2025 to honour the 200th anniversary of the invention of the modern railway.
Beginning on September 27, 1825, the Stockton & Darlington Railway connected individuals, communities, and ideas, ultimately changing the course of history.
Three councils—Darlington, Durham, Stockton-on-Tees, and Tees Valley Combined Authority—along with other local, national, and international partners have come together to deliver a number of internationally significant projects throughout the bicentennial year to commemorate that historic first voyage, which took place 200 years ago.
