Britain's Queen Elizabeth attends opening of London train line

Britain's Queen Elizabeth, whose public engagements have been limited in recent months due to mobility issues, made a surprise appearance on Tuesday at a ceremony to mark the completion of a long-awaited London train line named in her honour.
Elizabeth, wearing a bright yellow hat and coat and using a walking stick, was joined by her youngest son Edward and Prime Minister Boris Johnsonas she unveiled a plaque at Paddington Station.
It is the latest public outing for the 96-year-old monarch who, despite missing the opening of parliament for the first time in almost six decades last week due to what Buckingham Palace calls "episodic mobility issues", twice attended a horse show at her Windsor Castle residence in recent days.
"In a happy development Her Majesty The Queen is attending today's event to mark the completion of the Elizabeth line," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said.
The $24 billion rail project was originally due to be opened in December 2018, but had been repeatedly delayed by issues with safety testing and signalling systems, even before the onset of the pandemic.
Originally named 'Crossrail', the Elizabeth line will connect destinations west of London, including Heathrow airport and Reading with Shenfield in the east. It will open to the public on May 24.
Elizabeth has been seen in public on only a few occasions since spending a night in hospital last October for an unspecified illness, after which she was told to rest by her doctors.
She has since carried out nearly all her duties either remotely or in person at her Windsor Castle home and did not attend last week's state opening of parliament.
Johnson said it was "wonderful" to see the queen open the train line, and she was in "such fine form".
The prime minister said it was time to think about a new Crossrail line running north-south through London, which was put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think we should be getting on with that. People say it is all changed, people are working from home. I profoundly disagree," he said. "Public transport is the thing that gives people opportunity."

Deutsche Welle 22 June 2022 (Germany) Transport bosses say work is scheduled to begin in 2024 as modernization of heavily used routes is essential if Germany is to meet its climate targets. The government wants to push ahead with the renovation of Germany's railway network. The general overhaul of the first rail corridor is slated to begin in 2024, Transport Minister Volker Wissing and Deutsche Bahn (DB) boss Richard Lutz announced on Wednesday in Berlin. What is the current state of Germany's rail network? Wissing said the network had been neglected for years and pushed to "its absolute limit." Many railway points and signal boxes are outdated and highly prone to failure. "It cannot stay the way it is," he said. Increasing demand, combined with aging infrastructure and construction work, is leading to "traffic jams and delays with a massive impact on all customers," Lutz said. The current operational quality of the rail system is not acceptable to anyone, and a radical change of direction is needed, he added. About 51,000 passenger and goods trains travel through Germany every day. That figure is expected to increase to 59,000 by 2030, Lutz said. The head of Germany's national rail operator had already sounded the alarm at the end of May and complained about the the state of the network : "We have a dilemma that can hardly be resolved in the short term: grow and modernize at the same time." What are the plans for the future of German rail? DB and the Transport Ministry want to address the issue by turning particularly busy sections of the rail network into a "high-performance network" that should become a quality and stability anchor for the entire railway network. According to Lutz, heavily used sections make up about 10% of the entire network, around 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles). These sections are already operating at 125% capacity. By 2030, the length of heavily used sections is expected to increase to 9,000 kilometers, the DB boss said. In the planned general renovation, DB wants to take three new criteria into account. In the first instance, all planned construction measures are to be "radically bundled" in order to keep sections of the route free of construction sites for several years. Secondly, not only should existing defects be eliminated during construction work in the future, but additional measures should also be taken. The high-performance corridors are to receive a "first-class equipment standard." Thirdly, more customer-friendly construction should be used in future construction planning. Rail plays an important role in the German climate protection goals for 2030. SNCF says it is looking at a “record summer” for train travel, as tourists flock back to France after two years of stringent Covid regulations. In order to cope with the influx of passengers, SNCF’s CEO, Jean-Pierre Farandou, announced on Thursday that the company would put 500,000 additional seats on sale. “We’re off to a record summer,” said Farandou. The train operator says they have already sold over eight million tickets for the key vacation months of July and August – a 10 percent increase from 2019. “We are at capacity, so we will add trains. We will also create double configurations to allow two trains at a time,” explained Farandou. Farandou added that though trains might be full for the big vacation days, there are “still spaces” outside of these periods that are available. The announcement comes as several airlines – namely Easyjet and Ryanair – have announced plans for strikes this summer. Long lines, staff shortages, and strikes at key airports have made travel by train more attractive than air journeys for many.
