Fast rail commitment for Sydney ‘megaregion’ urged by urban policy think tank

JULY 20, 2021 (Australia)

A fast rail network that would transport passengers between Sydney and Newcastle in an hour is part of a pitch to better connect the region surrounding Australia’s largest city.

Committee for Sydney is calling on the NSW government to prioritise building the infrastructure to slash travel times in the “sandstone megaregion” encompassing Sydney, Wollongong, the Central Coast and Newcastle.

The urban policy think tank’s chief executive Gabriel Metcalf wants the Berejiklian government to release a business case for a Sydney to Newcastle fast rail project by the end of the year.

“I know they’re thinking about doing this.

“What we’re doing is trying to provide a supportive context for going ahead and doing this even though there are so many competing interests coming out of Covid-19.”

To catch a train from Sydney to Newcastle currently takes about two-and-a-half hours.

The idea of a fast rail network for the greater Sydney region and to Canberra has been floated for at least a decade and became part of a key re-election promise for the Coalition in 2018.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has since committed to faster rail of up to 200km/h on four key regional routes.

Ms Berejiklian this year indicated her interest in rail capable of even faster speeds but the details on the scope of this work, and on which routes will take priority, are yet to be finalised.
