24 April 2023 (UK)
As part of the East Coast Digital Programme, the first Class 387/1 Great Northern Electrostar train operated by Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has been modified with ETCS in-cab signalling to improve reliability and cut down on delays.
The Class 387 is the first significant commuter fleet in the nation to receive the technological upgrade,
and it provides the groundwork for the upgrade to be applied to the rest of the enormous Electrostar fleet in the UK in preparation for future extension of ETCS across additional lines.
The in-cab signalling system was installed in Unit 387101 along with the most recent version of ETCS available in the UK (BL3 R2, commonly known as version 3.6.0).
To assure proper installation of the ETCS system, each new component was put through powered-down electrical testing.
