18 September 2023 (Europe)
The acquisition of Thales's Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) in the European Union has officially resumed with Hitachi Rail's resubmission of its merger notification to the European Commission.
Ground Transportation Systems (GTS) business of Thales will be acquired by Hitachi Rail, it was revealed in August 2021.
Since then, Hitachi Rail and Thales have worked to close the €1,660 million transaction, obtaining all essential regulatory approvals, including merger permissions in 11 of the 13 required jurisdictions.
After the Commission expressed concerns about the potential effects of the merger on competition for mainline signalling projects in France and Germany, Hitachi Rail withdrew its EU filing in November 2022.
To allay the EC's worries, Hitachi has suggested selling up a chunk of its own signalling business.
