Can trains leverage developing Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to become a truly zero-carbon source of transport as the world increasingly looks to technology to combat climate change?
The programme team for the 500-mile high-speed rail network connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, known as the California High Speed Rail project, is already looking for the solutions.
A 25kV AC Auto-transformer traction power network, with sub-stations for traction power spaced around every thirty miles, will power the train corridor. However, the project is proposing to employ just one utility connection at each sub-station, together with solar and BESS systems as the backup power source.
Initial research and studies have found promising results.

18 July 2024 (Perth, Australia) A 10-year, $1.6 billion contract has been awarded to AD Alliance – a partnership between Alstom Transport Australia Pty Ltd and DT Infrastructure Pty Ltd – to design, supply, and build Perth's High-Capacity Signalling (HCS) project. The HCS project will replace and significantly upgrade the signalling and train control systems on Perth's rail network. This will allow more trains to run more frequently, ultimately increasing capacity by 40 percent. The HCS control technology will be housed in the new state-of-the-art Public Transport Operations Control Centre (PTOCC) in East Perth. This facility will serve as a central hub to ensure smooth and safe public transport operations, including incident management.
