Push to bridge the divide at historic Eveleigh rail yards

The Sydney Morning Herald

The City of Sydney council is pressing the state government to bridge the divide between North and South Eveleigh by building a long-vaunted pedestrian and bike path over the train tracks dividing the developments at historic rail yards in Sydney’s inner south.

Locals want a direct route between the Carriageworks culture hub at North Eveleigh and the University of Sydney on one side of the rail line, and the South Eveleigh technology precinct and Alexandria on the opposite side.

Those who want to cross the tracks on foot or bike currently have to use Redfern or Erskineville train stations, which are nearly two kilometres – or about a 20-minute walk – apart.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said in a letter to Transport Minister David Elliott that an active transport bridge should be included in plans to redevelop parts of the rail yards, not “delayed indefinitely”.

“This bridge would be a vital connection to bring communities together and for easy access to key facilities such as the University of Sydney campus, Carriageworks and [Redfern’s] Gibbons Street bus interchange,” Moore said.

The government plans to develop more apartments and offices around major transport hubs, including Central, Redfern and Waterloo, as part of its “Tech Central” employment and innovation corridor, running from Ultimo to South Eveleigh.

Moore said in her letter this month that recent proposals to overhaul parts of Eveleigh – including the Paint Shop sub-precinct next to Carriageworks – lacked a commitment to deliver the bridge. She said a pedestrian route over the tracks had been flagged in the former Redfern Waterloo Authority’s plans as early as 2006.

“Residents of Darlington and Chippendale continue to raise concerns with me about poor connectivity with neighbouring communities in Erskineville, Redfern, Waterloo and Alexandria across railway tracks, which also create a divide between North and South Eveleigh innovation precincts,” Moore said.

She urged the government to commit to providing the active transport bridge across using proceeds from the $263 million sale of the former Australian Technology Park, now known as South Eveleigh.

REDWatch residents group spokesman Geoff Turnbull said a bridge crossing the tracks between the train stations – ideally near Carriageworks – could cut the trip to get to either side to a few minutes.
