TransPennine Express trials the UK's first AI-powered speech-to-text announcements aimed at enhancing travel experiences for passengers with hearing impairments

A state-of-the-art announcement system, developed to enhance travel for hearing-impaired passengers on TransPennine Express (TPE) trains, has successfully completed its pilot phase and is the first of its kind to be implemented on the UK railways.
Created in collaboration with tech company Televic, the new system enables passengers to view real-time transcriptions of live announcements made by conductors on TPE’s onboard screens.

The Beerburrum to Nambour (B2N) Rail Upgrade project has achieved a significant milestone as the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has awarded the contract for delivering the major rail works package for Stage 1. This package encompasses the duplication of the rail line between Beerburrum and Beerwah, the straightening of the rail line between Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains, an enhanced park-and-ride facility at Beerburrum, new or improved road overpasses, and upgraded train signaling systems. This contract award enables the Joint Venture, along with its designers SMEC Australia and WSP Australia, to proceed with finalizing the designs and commence construction of the major works package.
